MA-4

13 September 1961

The MA-4, single-orbit unmanned Mercury flight was the first Mercury capsule seen by Muchea.

Astronaut Scott Carpenter led the US Flight Control Team which visited Muchea for the mission.

Muchea

Muchea’s Station Director Lewis Wainwright preserved this copy of a plot of the pass of MA-4 over Muchea using data from Muchea’s Verlort Radar.

Image assembled, with varying degrees of success, by Colin Mackellar from several photos. (The large plot is mounted behind glass, and the paper has wrinked badly.)

With special thanks to Cathy and Kevin Wainwright. The plot has since been donated to the Tidbinbilla archives for safe-keeping.
