Cyril tells the story of how he built the models:

“Many years ago around Apollo 11, I built the Saturn-V Rocket. I then decided it didn’t look right without the launch tower but, after surfing the internet for a model, the only available one was a paper one. I started to put it together but my 85 year old arthritic fingers were useless so I painstakingly converted it and made it from balsa, gluing on the paper cutout as required, and you can see the results by the photo.

Then along came Covid and, while being holed up alone in an aged care facility, I decided to construct the manned mission rockets, both Russian and American. I was not able to get some of the models so I constructed them myself and it is marvelous what you can do with water pipe, casting resin and balsa from Bunnings and a bit of laser colour printing.

Not satisfied with that I though about trying to make the Honeysuckle Creek Antenna. I searched and inquired but there was no model available so I then started experimenting and after many attempts and throw aways I finally was able to construct a 1:200 scale model. I thought it was a bit small so I then constructed a 1:150 scale model which I was pleased with.

Not satisfied with all that and still bored, being alone, I thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be nice to have a model of Honeysuckle Creek’. I already had the spare antenna and using my computer and modelling skills I started the project. I was able to find a modeller who made the gum trees and wattle trees for me.

I must also mention and thank Hamish as his photos came in very handy for the finer detail.”
