Viking audio
Here are a couple of snippets of audio recorded in 1976:
Viking audio news service:
In the lead up to the Viking 1 landing, I recorded several brief news reports from the recorded JPL audio news service in Pasadena. In 1976, such calls cost around $2.70 Australian per minute. Here’s one 60 second item, complete with the progress tones at the start, and the charging tone as the call is connected: 233kb mp3 file.

Recorded off-air from The Voice of America. The audio quality is quite poor, but the excitement is impossible to hide: 418kb mp3 file.
