Apollo 17 stereo pair

Here’s a stereo pair derived from parts of Apollo 17 images AS17-134-20378 and 20379 (courtesy of Kipp Teague’s Apollo Image Gallery).

In these photos taken by LMP Jack Schmitt, CDR Gene Cernan salutes the US flag during Apollo 17 EVA 1, on December 11, 1972.

The easiest way to see the stereo image is to use free fusion – start by bringing the images together with your eyes – focussing on Gene Cernan. It can take some getting used to (maybe a few minutes before you see the image rosck solid), but it is worth the effort.

If your browser cannot display the full width of the images, simply save them to your hard disk and use an image editor.

To produce this pair, the images were cropped, rotated and scaled. No colour matching of the two scans was attempted. The separation between the two photographs is a bit bigger than is ideal – but it works!

High resolution versions of the two images are available here –

Left 440kb – Right 404kb

If you have a stereoscope, these large versions would be ideal.
