About the logo:

Logo by Colin Mackellar, for the 40th anniversary celebrations in Canberra, based on the original NASA mission patch. A scan of the patch was converted to vector format and cleaned up.

In place of the original Earth sketch, a portion of AS11-44-6559 (with thanks to Kipp Teague’s Apollo Image Gallery) was substituted. That photo is part of an “Earthrise” sequence taken from Lunar orbit at about 0345GMT on Sunday July 20, just as Honeysuckle and Tidbinbilla were about to reacquire on Orbit 6. Parkes would begin to receive about 1 hour 40 minutes later. Goldstone was tracking, as were 30 foot sites at Hawaii and Guam. Carnarvon would soon join them. This view shows roughly the portion of the Earth that was visible during the EVA the next day.

The ‘40th Anniversary’ text was added using ITC Avant Garde Gothic – very similar to the font used for ‘APOLLO 11’ on the original patch.

About the logo: Syd writes –

I became interested in trying to do an ‘update’ on the NASA-Apollo mission logo. Essentially I re-drew all of it, with a fair amount done as vector images. The raster elements include: Earth from a screenshot done in ‘Celestia’; the Moon is from AS11-44-6664; the god Apollo is taken from the version in the Apollo 17 patch.
